What do you want out of your life?
There was a time in my life where I was all talk and no action. I had BIG plans for myself; but never managed to make the time to achieve my goals. It’s not that I wasn’t busy. I was always working on some project. But what didn’t align was what I stated where my priorities and what I actually spent my time on.
Honestly ask yourself, do you find yourself moving forward on your priorities or are you making excuses of why you don’t have time?
I have a client who works in the fitness industry and she has the desire to get her certification to become a personal trainer. She has been talking about this for more than a year, now. Anytime we discuss her progress there are a lot of different excuses of why she is inching along with her progress vs. getting it done and moving on.
Today we were talking and she told me she is on chapter 4 of the book she needs to read in order to get her certification. It has taken her 8 weeks to get this far in the book and she’s only 1/8 of the way through the book. I told her at the rate she’s going she’s 36 months away from taking her exam. I could hear the gasp over the phone as the reality of that statement settled in.
We began discussing that she is not making this a priority in her life. She started giving me excuses about how difficult it is for her to make time for studying. The reality is if this was truly a priority in her life she would have made the time already, otherwise it’s only a dream.
After some discussion, she admitted that fear is holding her back. It’s truly ironic because she has many women at the health club she goes to that encourage her to become a private trainer. She’s always had a passion to work in this area; her fear of failure is what’s keeping her from attaining her goal.
What is the priority in your life?
I’d like you look at how your time was spent this past week and point to specific actions you’ve taken that demonstrate that “_____” is indeed, a priority in your life. Or are you, just like this client of mine, finding that you have no time to work on your priority?
If you find it difficult to make the time ask yourself honestly if this really is a life priority for you. If it isn’t, stop kidding yourself and take if off your To Do List … you’ll be ridding yourself of time, and perhaps even some guilt, from not being able to complete this goal/dream/desire.
If it is, start taking a deep look to what is holding you back.
For me, I find that if something is truly a priority in my life I will somehow find a way to make time in my life for it. It may be that I need to let go of some old worn out obligations I’ve made, or that I need to organize certain aspects of my life to allow for additional time to put towards this goal.
It may be that I simply just need to honor the time commitment I need to get this done.
I would love for you to share what the priorities in your life are right now, and what’s holding you back from achieving them?
