What Do Hummingbirds and Procrastination Have In Common?
One of my VIPs have been struggling with getting a job. Her struggle is not the typical concern that is brought up by the news media. She struggles with procrastination. She’s come up with a handful of different excuses … ahem … reasons why she can’t pull together a resume and get it off her desk. She needs a job; but she is paralyzed by fear. Fear of rejection, fear of change, fear of what she doesn’t know.
So what do you do if you’re struggling with procrastination?
You take a deep breath and you move forward. You need to ask yourself what you’re afraid of and take a look at root cause. Often times, you’ll find the fear unfounded and it’ll be easier to walk through. Other times, it is a deeply rooted fear that will take time to work through.
For my friend, fear of rejection is her primary reason. She is going through a messy divorce and the marriage was very oppressive for her. She is struggling with rediscovering her talents and years of emotional abuse of being told she’s worthless.
She knows she has skills to get a good job; but the fear of rejection is preventing her from sending out a resume. We often talk about that no one can offer her a job if she doesn’t send a resume. Not applying for positions, she is protecting herself from rejection. Unfortunately this only continues to feed into her feeling of worthless.
Earlier this week, she reached out to me to share an experience. She was in conversation with someone about her procrastination as well as her upcoming divorce trial. As she and the other person were conversing by a window, she told me there was a very active hummingbird that kept zooming by and hovering right where they were talking. She said it was very distracting to their conversation.
We occasionally talk about symbolism in nature and it is one way I believe The Big Guy communicates with us. When she got home on a lark, she decided to google the symbolism of hummingbirds. She sent me the link to let me know that The Big Guy is watching out for her. The link stated “It’s a symbol for accomplishing that which seems impossible and will teach you how to find the miracle of joyful living from your own life circumstances“.
That beautiful little bird did more to lift her spirits then any conversation with a person. She knows she’s being watched over and that she is loved.

For me, I like to switch “procrastination” with The Big Guy’s own words: “Be Still and know that I Am”…works for me, for today! Or another phrase I am embracing is this one: When the employee is ready, the job will appear!
